Shop hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The shop is closed for lunch from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Students, faculty, and staff may use the shop during these hours as long as there are a minimum of two people in the shop at all times. One member of the shop staff must be present in the shop if any of the machine tools are to be operated. If no members of the shop staff are present in the shop, students, faculty, and staff may work at the benches with hand tools.

The shop is open to the entire Caltech community. There are, however, a few restrictions. ME 71 or the Shop Safety Course must have been completed prior to using any of the machine tools in the shop. The Safety Course is given two to three times a year during the winter term and summer recess.

Since this is the Mechanical Engineering shop, ME students, faculty, and staff will have priority on the machines. This priority applies to time on the machines and to the completion of projects by the shop staff. Others will be accommodated as availability and time permit.

When classes are in session (such as ME 71 and ME 72), the shop will be occupied heavily by students from these classes. These students will have priority over all other shop users when their class is in session. If a class is meeting in the shop for lecture or lab, the shop will be closed to all others until the class is over.

One mill and one lathe are set aside for the exclusive use of graduate students. They are separated from the rest of the machine tools and are not generally used by the undergraduate classes. All graduate students and faculty must have completed the safety course in order to use the graduate mill and lathe.

ALL shop safety rules will be complied with at ALL times.

The shop staff has the authority to deem that a student, faculty, or staff member is not working safely. The shop staff has the authority to ask them to stop using the machines and to leave the shop.
